Nurse Practitioners
Jeanne Miller, Sally Brooks and Jacqui Hale
- As
advance practitioners and independent nurse prescribers, Jeanne
and Sally will see patients of all ages in a 12 minute surgery, consisting of
appointments with a wide variety of acute illnesses and health
problems. They will make an assessment, which may include a physical
examination, make a diagnosis and decide with the patient on an
appropriate course of treatment or on a management plan. This may
include advice referral for further investigation, an appropriate
prescription, or referral to another member of the medical team.
In some circumstances they will facilitate the issuing of medical
certificates. Our Nurse Practitioners also see patients to discuss
and prescribe contraceptive needs. Chronic disease management is
usually monitored by the Health Sisters but they will see those patients if an acute
problems occurs. Patients who are trying to stop smoking can also
see our Nurse Practitioners for support.
Health Sisters
- Their traditional role included routine health checks, cervical
smears, menopause clinic, travel clinic, flu immunisation clinic,
over 75yr checks and asthma clinics. However over the last 3-4 years
they have taken on the treatment and monitoring of Hypertension,
Ischaemic heart Disease, Peripheral Vascular Disease and Diabetes.
We have expanded the team of Sisters from two to three. In the last
two years we have trained a team of Health Care Assistants to help
with Diabetic Clinics, COPD clinics, and we are looking for them to
take over more of the Sister’s traditional tasks to free them up for
other chronic disease work.

Training
The Unit has a tradition of training. We believe we can learn fresh
ideas from new members of the NHS team, and can give them the
benefit of our long experiences in health care. You will sometimes
find that a doctor will have a Registrar present and a nurse, health
visitor or midwife may have a student with them. Sometimes a video
camera will be recording consultations for training purposes. Your
consent will always be sought: we appreciate your cooperation in
helping us to maintain this valuable work.
